FUN FACTS WITH REVHARD: The Skyline lineage is one of the most popular to have been produced, and like all lineages, there are clear favorites. The R32 was one of the most devastating race cars of all time, being banned from group A racing for winning to easily, and the R34 was the star of one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. Unfortunately, the R33 gets forgotten next to these two icons, but we’re not so convinced it was entirely to do with the car itself, and perhaps, just poor timing, and here’s why.

The R33 was released in 1995, and looked to improve on some of the flaws of the R32, however, the drivetrain and AWD system were predominantly the same, which people recognized and were unimpressed by. Unfortunately, another huge influential factor was that people were still not over the R32. It was a cheaper price point than the R33, for the same powertrain, and the R32 had the proven race pedigree and a styling which people liked better.

Well, the R32 is a great car, but it was competing in an era that didn't really offer much competition. We don't want to discredit the achievements of the R32, but when it came time for the R33 to take over, the competition was stiffer, and due to the R32 being kicked out of group A, the R33 was forced to compete in GT racing. Companies like Subaru, Honda, Toyota and Mitsubishi had caught up, and made vehicles that could go head to head with the likes of the RB26, meaning that the R33 didn’t have as much race success as the R32.

Lastly, The R33 was released at the same time Japan was going through an economic crisis, and the automobile industry was amongst the worst affected by this crisis. The prolonged recession resulted in dwindling purchasing power and a reduced ability to market. Additionally, it also had an impact on overall production. Despite all this, the R33 still had some highlights. It became the first production vehicle to break 8 minutes at the Nürburgring, and finished 5th in its at Le Mans.

Almost 30 years later, the R33 has finally begun to receive the credit it deserves. While it didn’t have quite the success of the R32, it is still a formidable vehicle that should not be overlooked.

BUYERS GUIDE FOR THE FD RX7: We’ve noticed over the past few months that with both the exchange rate of the yen, and the excitement of the R34, S15 and Evo 6 becoming legal, that the FD has averaged out to a very affordable price point. Purchasing a well put together and looked after FD from Japan is much more realistic than ever before, and with that in mind, we put together a quick buyers guide to help anyone on their hunt.

By the time the 90s rolled around, the Rx7 was due for a refresh. The FC had been in production for 5 years and it was time for the next iteration, the FD. A more rounded appearance than the previous models, a perfect 50;50 weight distribution, and a potent twin turbo 13B engine, made the FD sought after from the get go.

For Japan FD’s, there’s two series, and multiple specifications, with the most sought after being the Type R Bathurst, Type RS, Type RZ and the Spirit R, which were all rated at 276hp and produced between 1998-2002.

It’s a common misconception that rotary engines are unreliable, however, they just require a little more care. They burn oil by design, and need to be topped up more regularly. When purchasing an FD, it's best to look for proficient service history and a seller who knows how to take care of a rotary engine to ensure the engine hasn’t been starved. Rotaries also run really hot in the engine bay, so checking over vacuum lines and rubber hoses is a must.

The twin turbo system is sequential in a stock FD, meaning the turbos spool at different RPMs and it is common for the second turbo to fail. If inspecting in person, you should be able to feel a second kick from this turbo around 4500rpm on your test drive, otherwise it’s likely blown.

Lastly, and somewhat a contradiction to earlier, is look for modifications. While modifications aren't really something to steer clear of, these cars were once considered a cheap option for racers, and a lot of these will be modified in a budget way with old technology, so make sure to do your research on what's been done to it so you know what you’re getting yourself in to!

This 1994 Nissan Skyline GT-R features some nice but subtle modifications that really make this R32 stand out. The RB26DETT has been lightly modified and features an Apexi cold air intake, Apexi Power FC, and a Koyorad radiator.

The exterior is in fantastic condition and features a very nice set of white TE37 wheels that complement the white paint very well. The interior also remains very clean and mostly original, with the exception of the carbon fiber interior trim, AEM Wideband AFR gauge (located in the glove box), and a Kenwood head unit. The car also has a JEVIC verified odometer reading and currently shows only 86,000 kilometers.

Overall, this R32 has a lot going for it. The white on white exterior looks fantastic while still retaining the classic Skyline look. The light modifications only add to the performance and don’t take away from the elements of the original driving characteristics of the Skyline GT-R.

FUN FACTS WITH REVHARD: Ever wonder how after all these years, Honda can still be seen as both one of the most fuel efficient and performance oriented car manufacturers? Or how their cars have continued the theme of being high revving pocket rockets. Well it’s all thanks to one man, Soichiro Honda, and the path he walked to get the company to the point it is today. Here is the history of the man behind Honda!

Honda was founded in 1946, just after world war II, however, Soichiro had already established a prior company, Tōkai Seiki, which made piston rings. After several attempts, and a lot of research, Honda won a bid to manufacture and supply piston rings to Toyota just before the war. Unfortunately, the war was not kind to the company. He lost his factories, majority share, and presidency of the company. Deciding to start fresh with the money from Toyota, he founded the Honda Institute for Technical Research.

At the time, bicycles were the most commonly used transportation. Honda decided to power these bicycles with small engines and received 500 units of 50 cc two-stroke engines from war surplus. Honda used these 50 cc engines to produce motorized bicycles which became instantly popular and their demand grew.

In 1949, Soichiro sold HITR and founded Honda Motor Co. Over the next decade, Honda perfected their craft of motorcycle engineering, becoming the largest motorcycle company in the World. In 1963, Honda produced their first ever automobile, and soon after, their firsts sports car, the S500. Funnily enough, the Japanese government told Soichiro in 1962 that Honda was only to produce motorcycles, and later that year, he unveiled the s360 prototype, which later became the s500, as a middle finger to them. He even painted it red, which was a color that was exempt from use on passenger vehicles, and reserved for fire trucks.

With so much success, you’d wonder why cars? but it wasnt to dissimilar to bikes for him. Essentially, Honda took the short stroke, big bore technology that bikes employ, upped the displacement, and put it in a car, hence why Honda engines rev to such astronomical numbers. After that first car, Honda never really stopped.

COMMON GTR UPGRADES THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE: We’ve imported, worked on, and our employees have owned, a significant number of GTR’s over the years, and one thing we can all agree on, is that these cars in stock form do not live up to the expected standard.

We’ve said it time and time again, so we won't harp on it too much here, but these vehicles are outdated in technology AND their parts have been in the vehicle for 25+ years. Not only will new parts help eliminate potential problem areas and failure points, but they help the cars overall operation. Below are a few common upgrades we’ve come accustom to installing over the past year;

Intercooler and piping kit: HKS and Greddy are the main two upgrades that we’ve used, and will address the engines ability to pull air in as efficiently as possible and provide as much cooling for as long as possible. An efficient intercooler design can give the benefit of 5% to 10% more power and keep the cars operating temperature cool.

Upgraded coil packs: R35 coil packs or splitfire are the go to, an will help the car run smoother after a tune. This upgrade alone won't add any power but with supporting mods and a tune, it will help fuel efficiency and performance.

Turbo upgrade: HKS, Tomei or R34 turbos (for r32 or r33), will be your biggest bang for buck performance upgrade. Depending what you are after, one of these options will usually be right for you, or you could go the single turbo route. Upgrading turbos will usually yield a more responsive drive for the sheer fact that these new turbos will be functioning as they should, as opposed to their worn counterparts.

Stand alone ECU: The standalone ECU ties everything above together. Couple this with a professional tune, and your RB will be running better than ever! The ECU that we predominantly use is LINK, however, Haltech is also a great option.

ICYMI, Attack Tohoku was held a few weeks ago, and marks the start of the time attack season in Japan. It is held at Sportsland Sugo, and is considered a little more laid back then the events to come, giving drivers the perfect chance to finalize testing of their cars leading in to the season.
